GMail won, at least for the geek and other mail stats

GMail is now the first free email provider for the geeks.

Today I was curious, I looked a bit at the email addresses used to register for an InDefero hosting. I was surprised by the number of emails ending with @gmail.com, I bet you would be completely off if I asked you the percentage of GMail addresses used to register here.

46% are using GMail, yes! Nearly half of the registrations are made using a google address. This is blowing my mind. Hotmail is dead with 1.45% and Yahoo! Mail resists a little with 4.5%.

I found also a nice list of disposable email services, the list is here, if you do not trust me, do not hesitate to use one of these services, they are working well:

Update:

Matt Freeman just pointed to me that the stats can be even more in favor of GMail:

I bet the actual statistic if even higher as Gmail can now be used for free with your own domain (instant signup) and Google Enterprise (£25/yr++ for 25gb, SLA, no ads) etc.. has been available for a long time. A lot of people in the Alt.Net space etc.. follow this route.. Would be interesting to do a "host -t mx" on the distinct of domains that aren't gmail.

You bet I tried:

$ host -t mx mattfreeman.co.uk
mattfreeman.co.uk mail is handled by 10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
